by Adrian Tchaikovsky
A terraforming project meant to seed a distant world with monkeys and a nanovirus to speed their evolution goes wrong, and it is spiders who inherit the gift instead. Thousands of years later, an ark ship carrying the last of humanity arrives expecting a new home. Tchaikovsky alternates between the two species across generations, building a spider society from the ground up and asking what a truly alien intelligence might value, and whether humans can share a world with it.
